Google Analytics for wordpress.com blogs?
I am not terribly knowledgeable about computers, blogging, and all of that technical stuff. However, based on my research, it seems like people who have blogs through wordpress.com (as opposed to wordpress.org) cannot use Google Analytics. My understanding is that wordpress.org people have their own domains, and .com people are like this blog where it is http://name of the blog.wordpress.com. If anyone knows any differently, I’d welcome your feedback. Thanks!

I haven’t played around with Google Analytics that much, but I don’t think you need your own domain to get started with it. The primary thing you need to do is install some Javascript code in your template - which is easy, if wordpress.com lets you do so.
Also, if I’m wrong and Google Analytics does require your own domain, there are plenty of other good remote traffic analysis tools out there, like SiteMeter, which I’m pretty sure don’t require your own domain.

I use Analytics and as Shai says, it asks you to put a little line of code into your blog to make sure that you own it. If you don’t have access to the CSS, you won’t be able to get that in there.

I think the situation is the wordpress.com won’t let you use JavaScript. I think I’ll just have to go to sitemeter…
thanks!

But don’t WordPress.com blogs have their own tracking system?

Yes, but it isn’t very good and as far as I can tell only keeps stats for the past 30 days.

The free version of WordPress (wordpress.com) does not allow the javascript code. That is why I went with my own domain and use wordpress via the .org.

oh i see… if WordPress.com doesn’t allow Javascript, then you won’t be able to go with Google Analytics or SiteMeter, since both rely on adding bits of Javascript code to your blog. :( Sorry about that!
