Hmm. I would love cooperative schools or other alternatives too, but I'm afraid that really what this ruling means is that more black and hispanic kids will go to school with mostly other black and hispanic kids at underfunded schools. Not that that doesn't already happen on a painfully massive scale, but Louisville and Seattle had two really good integration programs that tried to reduce that. WTF is desegregation if the Supreme Court "limits the use of race in integration plans" as the lovely NYTs points out here http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/29/us/29scotus.html?em&ex=1183262400&en=796a88cf4425bafa&ei=5070. Desegregation without race. Lovely. Perfect conservative postmodernism.
Again, I'm all for better schools, perhaps cooperative or other alternatives, but I can't imagine how this ruling will somehow contribute to that... I wish it would but...... sigh.

This type of article really fuels my hope for a radical, grassroots rejection of public schools, and a turning towards cooperative schools or other alternatives.

If those five justices could repeal the fifteenth and nineteenth amendments, no doubt they would.
